GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING A KIDDUSH

We do hope that the occasion of your kiddush will be a very pleasant one. Following these guidelines should ensure a very enjoyable occasion for everyone.

  1. All foodstuffs must be kosher. This means that all products must come from a definitely kosher source. If a kosher kitchen is observed at home (complete separation of milk and meat, use of only kosher products, etc) foodstuffs may be brought from home. Otherwise please take great care to offer only products that were purchased from a vendor who has a kashrut authorization from a recognized rabbinate. (If in doubt please ask Naomi Sobel - 09-9505853 as early as possible)

  2. All foodstuffs must be either dairy or parveh.

  3. No bread, rolls, or pitot are allowed. (If you really want to serve bread products arrangements must be made for sitting at tables, Netilat Yadayyim, ha-Motzi, and Birkat ha-Mazon - Grace After Meals - and to get prior authorization from Rabbi Roth well in advance.)

  4. No hot food or drinks may be served. (In exceptional circumstances please get prior authorization from Rabbi Roth well in advance.)

  5. Everything for the Kiddush must be brought to the Synagogue before the start of Shabbat (or the Festival). For candle-lightings time this week please click here.

  6. All food must be refrigerated or kept well covered in the Synagogue kitchen.

  7. A regular kiddush consists of wine, grape juice and cake.

  8. On a Shabbat Noar one should figure on about 40 people attending services.

  9. One bottle of wine serves approximately 16 people. Usually 3-4 cakes and some biscuits (such as vaflim) are adequate for a regular kiddush. Snacks (such as pretzels, Bisli, etc.) are optional. Soft drinks (3-4 bottles e.g. a mix of cola, fruit drink, mineral water) are also optional (but recommended in summer).
For special events there are often additional items such as herring, salads, dips, cold drinks, fruit, etc.

  10. For a Bar/Bat-Mitzvah a large bag of toffees is also usual.

  11. As much of the preparation as possible must be done before Shabbat:
    1. set up and cover the tables (in the foyer)
    2. set out the food on plates/trays or in bowls, cover well and refrigerate
    3. packets (e.g. bamba, bisli, crackers) should be opened and resealed
    4. wine and soft drink bottles should be opened and resealed.

  12. The family providing the kiddush is responsible for setting it up and for cleaning up afterwards. The rubbish bins inside the building must NOT be used, only the ones outside.

  13. Please remember to bring:
    1. disposable wine cups
    2. disposable drinking cups
    3. tablecloths
    4. paper napkins
    5. serving trays, baskets
    6. garbage bags
    7. whatever cutlery is needed for preparing and serving the food.

  14. For special events you will also need:

    2. disposable cutlery - spoons for serving, forks for eating with.

  15. Contact Naomi Sobel (09-9505853) to find out whom you should contact about opening the building for you to get everything ready.
