A few words from Rabbi Barry

Erev Shabbat Parashat Matot

Quickie Dvar Torah

It is written: The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Avenge the Israelite people on the Midianites; then you shall be gathered to your kin….Moses dispatched them on the campaign, a thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas son of Eleazar serving as a priest on the campaign, equipped with the sacred utensils and the trumpets for sounding the blasts.”

The Midrash asked, if God said to Moshe , ” Avenge the Israelite people on the Midianites,” why did he send others? Why didn’t he do it himself? The Midrash explained that because he grew up in the land of Midian, he did not want to hurt those who behaved graciously toward him. How great is the obligation of expressing thanks and gratitude. Even though God commanded Moses “avenge the vengeance of the children of Israel by the Midianites after you will gather with your people, ” he did not forgo the obligation of gratitude, and the command was not fulfilled by himself. .
