A few words from Rabbi Barry

Erev Shabbat Parashat Hukkat

Quickie Dvar Torah:

Remembering Miriam bat Yocheved and Amram

Miriam passes away in Parshat Chukat, as it is written: (B’midbar 20:1) The Israelites arrived in a body at the wilderness of Zin on the first new moon, and the people stayed at Kadesh. Miriam died there and was buried there.

How are we to remember Miriam? Although the Torah’s last reference to her, before her death, was in Parshat BeHaalotcha where it is written that she was stricken with Tzaraat, for speaking ill about her brother Moshe, the Torah and the Rabbis’ overall portrayal of her was as a a person with many strengths, a wonderful role model.

According to tradition, Miriam is to be remembered as the loving and caring sister who stood at the river bank watching and making sure that her brother floated safely down the “Yeor”. Also, according to the Rabbis, she was the brave midwife Puah, who risked her life when she disobeyed Pharaoh’s command to murder newborn Israelite boys .

Miriam is also to be remembered as a leader and a prophetess, one of the Triumvirate who together with Moshe and Aaron, was totally committed to people’s wellbeing. And finally, she was the first woman to lead the people in public prayers of Thanksgiving and praise to God.

May her memory continue to be a blessing!
