This Shabbat morning, the Noar of the kehila will meet. Come at 9:00 AM. Aryeh Friedler will run the special activities.

LAG B’OMER:

Members of the kehila including many children came to celebrate Lag B’Omer in Park Herzliya. Rabbi Glikin and Haim Caspi were responsible for the very successful Argentinian-style barbecue and sports activities. “Having fun” was the order of the day and the supper and games extended past 20:00. Thanks to everyone who came and participated in this celebratory event.

A VERY SPECIAL MORNING:

Rabbi Glikin led a very special tefila activity for special needs youngsters on Monday, May 14 at Hod V’Hadar in Kfar Saba. The group of children who participated are students from the OFEKSCHOOL in Herzliya, the school which is adjacent to Bet Merkaz LeKashish (in effect, our neighbors). What a very unusual occasion for these children and their parents and for those who work with them at Ofek. The morning event was filled with strong emotion and excitement and accomplishments. The mayor of Herzliya, Ms. Yael German, attended the program and spoke to the students and their parents. A most moving part of the program included the “Bar Mitzvah” group and its parents standing under a special Chuppah and receiving the “Birkat Banim” from the parents; Ms. German stood with them as well. Rabbi Glikin led the service and the activities which were part of the program; this program is part of the Tenua’s outreach inIsraelfor those children with special needs. It was a most meaningful experience to have Kehilat Torat Hayim, through its Rabbi and membership, as a part of this important opportunity.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 1996, the city ofFlorence(Italy) wanted to send a replica of the statue of “David” to the city of Jerusalemto commemorate the 3000th anniversary of King David’s designation ofJerusalem as the capital city. The gift of Michelangelo’s statue evoked a tremendous negative critical response especially in Haredi communities here because the original statue (and the proposed replica) is of a naked male figure. The compromise was another replica of Michelangelo’s “David” —this one of a clothed male figure which now appears in the Migdal David museum in Jerusalem.

Get ready and join us on May 10 at 17:00 in Herzliya Park for a special BARBECUE. We will be “setting up shop” in the area reserved for barbecuing (south of where we held our tefila last week). Please bring your own meat for hamburgers or kebab with soft drinks and bring mats, rugs or chairs, too, for your own comfort.

A SPECIAL BAR MITZVAH for a SPECIAL YOUNG PERSON:

The Masorti Movement has, for several years now, created a learning program for children with special needs which prepares them for becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. This enables children and their families to participate in a very unusual and meaningful event. On May 14 at 9:30 AM, Rabbi Glikin will lead such a tekes in Kfar Saba at Hod V’Hadar. Everyone is invited.

DID YOU KNOW?

Bows and arrows

Historically, children across Israel used to go out and play with bows and arrows, reflecting the midrashic statement that the rainbow (the sign of Gods promise to never again destroy the earth with a flood Gen9:11-13) was not seen during Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s lifetime, as his merit protected the world. In Israel, Lag BaOmer also marked in the Israel Defense Forces as a week of the Gadna program (youth brigades) which were established on Lag BaOmer in 1941 and which bear the emblem of a bow and arrow.

“It wasn’t easy; nothing worthwhile ever is, but we had so many joyous and memorable times, thanks to all those in the membership who contributed– each with his own talents and generosity.”

Cyril Solk in his own words about the Kehila.

The quotation above represents clearly the approach, spirit and deeds of our very special long-term HONORARY member of Kehilat Torat Hayim.

Cyril Solk was born in Leeds in Yorkshire in 1918. He emigrated to Israel with his late wife Netta in 1970.

In the summer of 1977, a group of residents in Herzliya met to arrange for High Holiday services. What became Kehilat Torat Hayim had its first Rosh Hashana in the Moadon Aliya on Ben Gurion Street. Among those participating were Cyril and Netta Solk. The group moved a number of times, first to an apartment on Sokolov, then to the Naamat building, then to Bet HaEzrach and now to Bet Mercaz LeKashish. Plans are just about completed to commence the construction of a permanent home for the congregation on Rehov Yehuda HaNasi in the Herzliya HaYerukah section of the city.

Throughout the early decades of the congregation, Cyril was instrumental in the planning and leadership of Torat Hayim. First as a member of its founding group, then as one of its early presidents –where he served for three and a half years, he held additional positions and was always available for fundraising, for tefilot, for support ing its Rabbis and visitors. He continues to be an active member of our synagogue community and “shul-going” is very much the norm for him.

In his unique dapper style, his contributions also include many catering activities; for certain, he is the acknowledged “king of the tuna mousse and strudel” and his flower arrangements are well remembered. To be invited to an English tea at his home is to experience an afternoon of rituals and delicious food!!

Cyril has two children, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He has been recognized as an Honorary Citizen of Herzliya and is in attendance at many city functions as a guest of the Mayor. He continues to tutor youngsters in elementary schools and enjoys a full compliment of cultural activities. He LOVES the beach and spends a morning a week on the edge of the Mediterranean in Herzliya.

Our lives are enhanced affectionately by our dear friend, Cyril Solk.
