ADULT BAT MITZVAH CELEBRATION: We are pleased to invite all members of the Kehila to
the Bat Mitzvah of Inga David, Harriet Goitein, Anna Greenspan, Berta Sharon
and Barbara Slater on an upcoming Shabbat morning. Date: 11th of Elul
corresponding to Shabbat, August 21, at Beit HaKashish. This is a very
important milestone for these women and for our kehila. We hope that you will
share in the simcha with them. HIGH HOLIDAYS are COMING!! The year is passing so quickly and in less than a
month and a half, we will observe Rosh Hashana. Our MEVASSER will carry the
information about the beginning of the NEW YEAR as well as a special mailing
which will be sent out to all members of the kehila within the next two
weeks. There will also be a GENERAL meeting of the kehila before Rosh
Hashana; watch for the date. SHABBAT CARLEBACH: Friday evening, erev Shabbat, August 20 at 6:30 PM. FROM THE MASORTI MOVEMENT: “The proposed law on conversion: “round one” is over.
For the members of our Tnuah and its friends, the first round of the “battle”
has been concluded with the postponement of a full vote of the Knesset on the
legislation proposed by M.K. Rotem. From the beginning of the final stages
prior to an impending vote based on a new conversion law, a huge segment of
the Israeli and international Jewish population, representing many diverse
communities, came together to attempt to block such legislation from being
called to a vote. We met with dozens of MKs and Ministers, with newspaper
editors and columnists, with government officials representing different
local and international communities, indeed, with many political
stake-holders and people of influence. More than 60,000 emails on this
topic were received by the office of the Prime Minister and many
thousands of emails and phone calls were made to members of the current
Knessset to reinforce the position against calling the proposed law to a
vote. Leaders of international Jewish groups also contacted the PM’s office
directly. This is but a temporary “victory,” the “opening round” as it were,
but it is a significant collective statement of concern and disapproval of
what might have been. (there is a six-month moratorium) We respectfully thank
all of you, all of those who participated in the support of the position
which is of such significance NOT ONLY to our movement but to the future of

Did you
know ? THIS WEEK’s section is sponsored by JACK DASH,
patriarch of the Dash-Dishon families. Bet Knesset “Tikvat Yisrael” was the first
synagogue that was established in South Africa. The year was 1849. Eight
years before, 17 Jews from Capetown met in a private home for Yom Kippur
services, A short time later, on Sukkot of the same year, they formally
established the congregation with the name of “Tikvat Yisrael,” a first in
South Africa. By 1849, they had purchased a house which they turned into the
first synagogue. Isaac Pulver was the first spiritual leader. With the growth
of membership, a new synagogue was built on the site which today is part of
the South African Jewish Museum complex. In the very early part of the
century, from 1806 on, when the country became controlled by the English,
religious freedom was established. A Dr. Frankel is the first known Jewish
male to have settled in Capetown in 1808. |
הידעת ? מוקדש על ידי ג'ק דש, אב משפחת דש-דישון. בית
הכנסת "תקוות ישראל" הוא הראשון שהוקם בדרום-אפריקה בשנת 1849. בשנת
